Bernie sits quietly at the garden entrance. The morning sunlight beams through the Hardenbergia archway. He sits upon one of three sleeper steps I put in many years ago. It's a perfect observation spot. There is a broken shovel handle I've popped into the ground. In the large pot grows a wild scented Rose Geranium. The opposite bed contains various plants, mainly succulents. I love this perspective of the garden. looking back through the archway with the morning sunlight, and I can watch the birds in the large birdbath in the distance of the backyard. (pencil sketch)

To wonder and respect the nature of small beings,
to only observe and nurture their path,

We have many Butterflies visit the garden. This Common Brown is feeding on a flowering leek. I allow many vegetables to flower and go to seed in the garden. Flowering leeks bring many little creatures to visit, including wasps, hover flies, and native bees.

We've had many Magpies visit the garden. This male maggie was a couple of years ago. He was foraging for food. These days the big bird territory in the garden is mainly Ravens and Currawong's, but there are tidings of maggies surrounding the area.

I've always loved animals. I'm a cat person. My family always had companion animals. I use this term, because 'pet' represents ownership, and in my world, all animals are companions, friends. They are with us, not for us. Throughout my childhood I connected more with cats. In this illustration I have worked from an old photograph where I am holding one of my Nanna's cats. He was a big ginger puss. There was always so many cats when we visited. I've adjusted a couple of things from the original photo, such as wearing flares to drawing gum boots. The inner child and wild natured woman always wears gumboots or goes barefoot. I've drawn myself sitting on the chair in the garden surrounded by growth, a little birdie collecting leaves from my hair, a bee buzzing near a sunflower, and instead of big ginge, I'm holding Bernie, Garden Supervisor.

Garden snails are most welcome in our garden. They can gobble up seedlings overnight, but I learnt that creating diverse plants, allowing leaf matter to break down around the plants, was appealing to them. Organic matter is the key for many soil dwelling creatures. They love it, and they help to break it down. There may be a few nibbles on my seedlings and other plants now and then, but there is no real damage, and I am happy to share with these fascinating Mollusks.

These two sketches I created while sitting in the garden. They are a quick sketch in a thick ink pen of the three sleeper steps I put in at the other side of the entrance to the garden, along with the large pot of scented geranium. Opposite is a little bird feeder amongst the growth. The feeder is on old gold pan that my stepdad gave me, and I fixed it to a pruned branch of the large cherry tree and popped it into the garden bed. This was a few years back. It is no longer there, but there is much dense growth in this part of the garden. A fig and Apricot tree are well established here now. I still have the gold pan, and shall create something else with it, to bring Jack's memory into the garden.

There were several maggies that visited the garden a few years ago. I had just shoveled a pile of soil onto a new garden bed and they were having a great time sifting through it for food. I observed their behaviour and wanted to capture their different poses and expressions with a few quick sketches.
